Hassan Hajjaj transforms the Maison EuropEenne de la Photographie into the Maison Marocaine de la Photographie
From September 11th to November 17th, the MEP presents the first French retrospective of Hassan Hajjaj, with a free reign on all its exhibitions spaces.
The huge path through the European House of Photography allows visitors to walk among the many series from the artist born in Morocco and living in London, making the MEP a “Moroccan House of photography”.
Born in 1961 in Morocco, Londoner since 1973, Hassan Hajjaj starts working on his photographic work as soon as 1980, influenced both by London’s cultural and musical scenes and his North African heritage. His art reflects his life between both countries : Hassan Hajjaj creates strong links between both cultures through his colorful and pop images, blending pop art and contemporary fashion photography together.
Yet beyond his wide colorful compositions and humorous tone, Hassan Hajjaj is a committed artist. His photographs are framed by consumption objects, mainly from Morocco, a play with brands imagery revealing of a new contemporary pop art conception and a way for the artist to express his mind on a consumers society and women wearing the veil.
Hassan Hajjaj’s work is exhibited under all its forms, in every corner of the MEP. Not only his photographic work is exhibited, but also videos, installations, decorative objects and furniture. The educational space is open for people to take pictures of themselves on a background chosen by the artist, and in the new library, are presented clothes and objects designed by Hassan Hajjaj.
