TRANS*GALACTIQUE celebrates the possibility of a plural and emancipatory trans*gaze.

Invited.ex by curators and artists Superpartners (SMITH, artist and researcher & Nadège Piton, curator and performer), Frank Lamy (curator, performer and DJ) and Balthazar Heisch (artist), and based on the eponymous issue of the photographic magazine The Eyes published in 2020.

Fifteen artists use photography and video to explore alternative, resistant, queer and ecological ways of relating to others and to the world, beyond an aesthetic of body transformation.

How can images bring other representations and realities into being? The history of photography and cinema has never ceased to show the bodies of dominated people objectified by dominant bodies. The explosion of technologies has enabled everyone to reappropriate ways of representing themselves, to perform new identities, to construct their own fictions and visions of the world. Between photography and video, the Trans*galactique exhibition celebrates the possibility of a trans, plural and emancipating gaze.

Its title evokes a constellation of artists, videographers and performers who are helping us to think of other ways of creating links and new alliances in an increasingly fragmented world. These gentle “manifesto images” describe the plural experiences and realities of trans people. Against this backdrop of rising intolerance, La Gaîté Lyrique – Fabrique de l’époque has teamed up with the photographic magazine The Eyes to give a voice to the men and women who make the times, and make visible the increasingly minoritized narratives at the forefront of societal demands.

La Filature, Scène nationale de Mulhouse produced a first version of this exhibition in March 2023.
