“Faire Face. Histoires de violences conjugales” is the result of a long-term project on violence against women and domestic violence, led by Camille Gharbi between 2018 and 2022. This work, comprising three photographic series, is both an observation – that of a situation as ordinary as it is terrifying – and a reflection on the conditions for its evolution.

The first series, entitled “Preuves d’amour” (“Proofs of love”), denounces the banality of conjugal feminicide. Her work is based on meticulous documentation and a delicate visual device, drawing on the concept of the “hollow image” and the power of suggestion, while the next two series examine the evolution of this situation.

“Les monstres n’existent” (Monsters don’t exist), produced between 2019 and 2022, questions the deconstruction of one’s relationship with violence when one has been the perpetrator. The work is carried out in prisons, with inmates incarcerated for acts of domestic violence or feminicide, and committed to taking responsibility for their actions.

The “Une chambre à soi” series, developed between 2020 and 2021 in a hostel for young women aged 18 to 25 fleeing situations of domestic, intra-family and/or sexual violence, looks at the process of rebuilding oneself when one has been the victim of violent acts.

Through individual and singular stories, told in images and testimonials, society as a whole is invited to “face up”, to deconstruct systems of thought and the construction of gendered roles.
